From 1219 onwards, records mention a church dedicated to Saint Lambert. Over the centuries, the building changed shape several times, but not location. The earliest church was simple in design and measured around 18 by 7 metres. From the 14th century onwards, it developed into a much larger church building.
In 1899, a new Neo-Gothic church was opened slightly further north, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The old Saint Lambert’s Church was largely demolished in 1901; only the choir remained. In 1944, both Saint Anthony’s Church and the last remains of Saint Lambert’s Church were destroyed by the war. The present Saint Anthony’s Church dates from 1962.
Archaeological excavations in 1948 revealed the ground plan of the old church once again. And in 2025, construction work brought another piece of that past to light: the south-west corner of Saint Lambert’s Church. A brooch discovered near the church serves as a tangible reminder of the long history of this special place.
