Fliegerhorst Venlo was constructed in 1941 for German night fighters, who downed 400 bombers in four years. The concrete control tower was used for air traffic control and the bunker as an emergency center. In September 1944, the airfield was bombed, abandoned, and made inoperable. The Americans restored the airfield and used the control tower until September 1944. Currently, the tower serves as a climbing wall.

Fliegerhorst

Between October 1940 and March 1941, the Venlo-Herongen Air Base was constructed as a German Fliegerhorst on the Groote Heide near Venlo. The complex had two runways of 1450 and 1200 meters, modern safety equipment, radio equipment, and night lighting and was expanded several times. Between January 1943 and August 1944, approximately 75 to 100 attacks were carried out, with a large part of the bombs landing outside the airbase. On September 3, 1944, the base was attacked and shut down. After the liberation of Venlo on March 1, 1945, the airfield was used by the Americans under the name Y-55 from March 10, 1945, to September 20, 1945. Most of the remains have been cleared on Dutch territory, while almost everything remains in the same state on the German side.
