The Areven Route in Stramproy offers a wonderful experience for both walkers and cyclists. This route highlights the rich flora and fauna of the area and takes you past charming chapels and historic farmhouses.
The area around Stramproy is part of the international GrensPark Kempen~Broek, which has held the prestigious UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status since the summer of 2024. This recognition emphasizes the exceptional value of the region, where biodiversity and sustainable development coexist in harmony.
During the route, you will explore the Areven, the Stramprooier Heath, and the Stramprooierbroek. Here, you can follow the winding Abeek stream, which forms the natural border with Belgium. The Areven features a diverse landscape of forests, meadows, and hayfields. The Stramprooier Heath is a former heath and drifting sand area, now predominantly covered with Scots pines. In the marshy Stramprooierbroek, the meandering Abeek creates a unique nature experience.
Along the route, you will also encounter two remarkable mills: the windmill "De Nijverheid," also known as the "Molen van Nijs," and the watermill "De Broekmolen." These historic landmarks add an extra cultural dimension to the route, seamlessly combining nature and history.
