The Rattentoren in Roermond is a medieval defensive tower made of red brick with a stepped gable, surrounded by greenery and a bright blue sky.

Places of interest

In the centre of Roermond, directly opposite the Saint Christopher Cathedral, stands the Rattentoren (the Rat Tower). It is one of the last remaining parts of the city’s medieval fortifications, built around the year 1300.

The Rattentoren in Roermond

Roermond once had twenty wall towers and ten city gates. From around 1500, these could no longer withstand the power of cannon fire. In 1781, the city lost its role as a fortress. Between 1819 and 1843, most of the walls and towers were demolished. Only the Rattentoren remained. Its spire was destroyed in the great city fire of 1554.

Scale model

Today, the tower houses an impressive scale model of Roermond as a medieval fortress, built on a scale of 1 to 25. During the summer months, Hart van Limburg city guides offer guided group tours by appointment.
