Meuse Cycle Route
Cycling along the Limburg Meuse Cycle Route
'Welcome to the LF Meuse Route': if you see a sign with this text, you are at the beginning of a great cycling adventure with the Meuse as your companion. Where the Meuse flows into Limburg, the international EuroVélo 19 cycle route changes for 160 kilometres into the Meuse route. Order your cycling map for the Meuse Cycle Route, section Limburg, here and discover the province rolling on your bike.
Discover Limburg along the Meuse
You can divide the province of Limburg into three regions: North, Central and South Limburg. The three parts of Limburg all look different. On the Meuse Cycle Route, you'll cross all of Limburg, and with the extra cycle loops, you'll discover even more.
Meuse Cycle Route North Limburg
In the north of Limburg, an unusual natural phenomenon has formed around the Meuse, called Maasduinen (river dunes). These were formed by the interference of another river, the Rhine, and wind. The Limburg Meuse Cycle Route skirts National Park the Maasduinen, but it is highly recommended to explore this nature reserve in more detail. Furthermore, you pass the castle village of Baarlo and the modern Maasboulevard of the city of Venlo. For the historical part, cycle to the Markt and admire the impressive town hall dating back to the year 1600.
Meuse Cycle Route Central Limburg
Around the fortified town of Stevensweert and bargee village of Maasbracht, you cycle right along the Maasplassen, the largest continuous water sports area in the Netherlands! Remains of former gravel extraction now provide endless water fun: boating, swimming, surfing, rowing and diving. Relax on one of the waterside terraces. The route also passes through the city of Roermond. This is traditionally a Roman Catholic diocese. In the city centre, enjoy many beautiful facades and taste the atmosphere on the cosy Munsterplein.
Meuse Cycle Route South Limburg
Right in the south of Limburg, the Limburg Meuse Cycle Route begins. You cycle along the straight Julianakanaal (canal) while high chalk walls rise along the Meuse. Before you know it, you're cycling over the cobblestones of historic Maastricht. The famous Sint Servaas bridge lets you cross the Meuse for the first time with great views over the city. After Maastricht, you will be introduced to the wild nature of RivierPark Maasvallei, where with a bit of luck you will spot kingfishers, beavers and maybe an osprey!
International Meuse Cycle Route
The International Meuse Cycle Route is a great challenge for any cyclist. This route starts from the source of the Meuse in France and runs through Belgium, to its mouth in Hoek van Holland. You will cycle through cosy towns, Meuse villages and a varied landscape during this 1050 km route. The route runs through the Belgian Ardennes into Dutch Limburg and leaves Limburg again in Bergen.
Art along the Meuse
Take a break from pedalling and enjoy the beautiful surroundings in peace. This was the inspiration for Limburg artist Patrick Kusters to create ten huge seats along the Limburg Meuse route. Each artwork refers to a special story from the municipality you are in. Take a selfie at the various locations and share it with the hashtag #MaasrouteLimburg.
Extra cycling loops Meuse Cycle Route
Is the route not long enough for you? Fancy some more Limburg cycling kilometres? Then cycle some more! Four connecting cycle loops have been plotted in Limburg. So you can make the route longer and get the most out of your cycling holiday in these beautiful surroundings.
