Cross-border nature reserve

Where Belgian and Dutch Limburg and North Brabant meet is KempenBroek. This vast 25,000-hectare nature reserve is one of the largest in Flanders and the Netherlands. Discover the Dutch towns of Cranendonck, Nederweert and Weert, and the Belgian towns of Bocholt, Bree, Kinrooi and Maaseik. Since summer 2024, KempenBroek has been awarded the prestigious title of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This UNESCO recognition is a great honour for this unique area, where nature thrives and people live in harmony with the environment. It’s ideal for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway, wanting to enjoy open landscapes and explore diverse habitats including marshes, forests and heathland. This rich landscape provides a home for many rare plants and animals.

The municipality of Weert is known for its green surroundings and the many water and wind turbines that can be found there. Also in KempenBroek. There are several mills in the nature reserve that are well worth a visit. On certain days, the mills are open to the public and the miller will explain everything about the operation and history of these beautiful mills. Nature and Environment Centre De IJzeren Man

One of the gateways to KempenBroek is the Nature and Environment Centre De IJzeren Man. In this interactive visitor centre, you will learn everything about the nature of KempenBroek. The Nature and Environment Centre organises all kinds of activities for young and old about nature, the environment and sustainability. There is an aquarium with fish found in the Tungelroyse Beek and a large garden containing a herb garden, an insect garden and a tiny forest.
