The Kapeller Quarter consists of several monuments, including the Chapel in 't Zand with its processional walkway. It is a pilgrimage site and today also serves as a parish church.
According to an old legend, a shepherd found a statue of Mary in a well. After that, worship began, accompanied by various unexplained healings. In 1418, the town of Roermond decided to build a small chapel at this location. Due to the large number of pilgrims over the centuries, larger chapels were built repeatedly. The current chapel dates back to 1895. In the processional walkway next to the chapel, there are over 9,000 tiles with thank-you messages to Mary for favors and healings received.
The most well-known pilgrimage is that of the Sinti. The oldest pilgrimage still in existence comes from ’s-Hertogenbosch and has been visiting Roermond since 1881.
