The Mother Meuse Cycle Route between Grathem and Neer is a 61-kilometre route along both banks of the River Meuse. You follow the river through the characteristic Meuse landscape and cross it twice by ferry. Along the way you discover nature, historic sites and villages that have been connected to the River Meuse for centuries.

Cycling along the River Meuse and its stories

From Grathem you cycle towards Neer along one bank of the River Meuse. On the return journey you follow the opposite bank, revealing new views along the way. During the ride you will understand why the people of Limburg affectionately call the river Mother Meuse. The river has shaped the landscape and has played an important role in everyday life for generations.

Castles, mills and the Meuse landscape

Open floodplains, farmland and villages alternate throughout the route. You pass castles, fortified buildings and windmills that reflect the history of this region. You will also see a variety of farms and horticultural businesses, many of which once depended entirely on the River Meuse and its fertile banks. This route lets you experience both the landscape and the stories behind it.

Two ferry crossings

A highlight of this route is crossing the River Meuse twice by ferry. After junction 93 and again after junction 04, you cross the river and continue your journey on the opposite bank.

Please note: the ferries operate daily during the summer months. From October through April they run only at weekends. Check the current ferry timetable before setting off so you can plan your route accordingly.
